The heroine, Anne Elliot, is introduced not as the “very pretty girl”, but as a woman, whose “bloom had vanished early”. She is one of Austen’s quietest heroines, but also one of the strongest and most open to change. She lives at the time of the Napoleonic wars, which is a time of accident, adventure, the making of new fortunes and alliances. |
