Emma is a novel about the dangers of misinterpreted romance. The main character, Emma Woodhouse, is described in the opening paragraph as “handsome, clever, and rich.” The novel charts Emma’s gradual realization of her own lack of self-knowledge. It centers upon her determination to arrange her life and the lives of those around her into a pattern dictated by her romantic fancy. Along the way, there is much of heartbreak, romance and detailed, subtle character representation. Emma is often seen as a wonderful depiction of the workings of a well-meaning but ill-directed mind wishing to act selflessly. |
